The imported honey on Swedish store shelves contains mostly sugar and syrup. This is shown by a DNA test conducted by beekeepers, reports SVT.

The trade organization Beekeeping Companies used a new DNA technique to test 40 honey products available in Swedish grocery stores.

Only four of them contained genuine honey, all of which were from Sweden. The contents of the remaining 36 jars, all of which were imported, primarily consisted of sugar and syrup, reports SVT.

We believe it is extremely serious. We knew that there were fake products on the market, but we are shocked by the scope, says the chairman of Beekeeping Companies, Yngve Kihberg, to SVT News.

According to the organization, the fake honey mainly comes from China and is produced in a way that makes it slip through the testing methods currently approved by the EU.
