The imam in southern Sweden who preached about how men should beat their wives will now have to leave his assignment, writes Expressen.

"The board has now decided to terminate his voluntary service as prayer leader", the congregation writes in a press release on its Facebook page.

Expressen has previously reported on the imam's sermon in a mosque in southern Sweden this summer. The subject of the sermon was "disobedient women" and dealt with what the women's husbands have the right to do to discipline them.

Admonish them, avoid them in bed and beat them, the imam is said to have said.

The imam has later explained that his words have been taken out of context and that he felt time pressure during the sermon. In an interview with the newspaper, he then wants to clarify that he believes the man can hit the woman to mark that he is upset, rather than as a way to harm or humiliate.

Social Minister Jakob Forssmed (KD) has called the sermon "terrible and completely unacceptable" in a post on X and says that he has been in contact with the responsible authority which "must urgently investigate whether any government grant has been paid to the mosque in question”.

The congregation emphasizes on Facebook that Islam prohibits all forms of violence and abuse against wives or women in general.

The imam who is now leaving his voluntary service was a substitute when the congregation's chairman was on a trip.

In the press release, the congregation's commitment to human rights and respect for Swedish law is emphasized.

"We hope to be able to continue this work without campaigns of hate and slander against Islam and Muslims", they write further.
