Niskanen quits World Championship: "Heartbreaking"

The Finn Iivo Niskanen withdraws from the Cross-Country Skiing World Championship in Trondheim due to illness. He is one of the all-time, absolutely best classical skiers. It's a loss for the arrangement and the sport that he's not here, says Norway's men's coach Eirik Myhr Nossum.

It is the flu that stops Iivo Niskanen, according to NTB, which refers to Viaplay's Finnish broadcasts.

It's sad. I must say, says Eirik Myhr Nossum, Norway's men's coach, to TT's correspondent.

I feel a lot for him and the Finnish team. I can only imagine being in a situation where one of our biggest favorites had missed (the championship). It would have been heartbreaking, says Myhr Nossum.

Niskanen's big gold chance in the championship would have been the 10 kilometer classical on Tuesday.

He is a legend in the sport and has had a really good season. He was perhaps one of the two biggest favorites for the gold on 10 kilometers – he and Johannes (Høsflot Klæbo), says Eirik Myhr Nossum.

Niskanen had previously announced that he could not participate in Saturday's skiathlon.
