It was not an easy match and I made some mistakes, says Swiatek after the match.
Lamens is ranked 66th in the world.
Swiatek won the first set easily with 6–1. But the second became much more even – tied 4–4 before Lamens could secure the set with 6–4.
After the second set, Swiatek disappeared into the catacombs of Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. When the 24-year-old came out again after a few minutes, she rubbed her wrist with a cream.
The third and decisive set began with the players exchanging points with each other, before Swiatek pulled away to 4–1. Lamens, however, came back into the match and reduced 3–5 to 4–5.
Despite the tension, it was still Swiatek who emerged victorious from the meeting – after 6–4 in the third set – and who will get to play in the third round of this year's last Grand Slam.
Also, the men's world number one Jannik Sinner advanced later on Thursday evening to the third round of the US Open. The Italian won in three straight sets against Alexei Popyrin, Australia (6–3, 6–2, 6–2).
