According to GP, hundreds of IFK Göteborg supporters marched through Gothenburg in protest before meeting Malmö FF supporters for a joint protest.
When the match at Gamla Ullevi started, both sides fell silent - just as promised.
“During the first 20 minutes of the match, we will hold a protest together with Malmö’s supporters. Kommandobryggan will also echo empty,” Kommandobryggan, an association representing IFK Göteborg’s supporter groups, announced earlier this week.
There were empty seats in IFK Göteborg’s home section, while a banner was unfurled in Malmö FF’s away section with the message: “Police-free zone - for a safe stand”.
When the match clock reached 20 minutes, the home supporters made their entrance, unfurling a banner with the same message as MFF’s, while flares were lit.
The protests come after last week’s derby between IFK Göteborg and Häcken. After a flare was lit, riot police in full gear moved into the IFK Göteborg supporters’ section. Chaos broke out and 15 people were arrested.
The police’s actions have been heavily criticized by several groups within Swedish football.
