Ida-Lova's song "Svagare än jag" was a hit last year. The 21-year-old won awards at both the P3 Guld and the Musikförläggarnas gala and has more than 36 million streams at the time of writing. She could soon also win a Grammis in the Newcomer of the Year category.
She herself is having a hard time coming to terms with her successful year.
"It's completely, completely unreal. I'm still trying to grasp that everything that happened actually happened," she says.
Found courage
She couldn't have predicted that "Svagare än jag" would become such a huge hit:
"I knew it was good, but it was also 100 percent "me" for the first time. Why would it fail, I guess? But thanks to the fact that it worked out, I've found the courage to dare to believe in myself," she says.
Now comes the debut album "Life will kill us, we live it anyway". But the road to it has not been a straight line. Even though Ida-Lova has been writing music since the age of twelve, she has not dared to focus on her own material.
The turning point came when she was dumped by her previous record label - something that turned out to be a blessing:
"Now no one was trying to put me in a particular category, and I dared to do it my way. But I've also gotten older and gathered more courage," she says.
Ida-Lova's music has also reached beyond Sweden's borders. She believes that the fact that she has gained a strong foothold in Norway is due to a combination of "luck and timing".
"It never even occurred to me that I could be listened to in another country, since I sing in Swedish. But maybe my songs are universal in some way?"
Darkness
She describes "Life will kill us, we live it anyway" as an album full of joy and enthusiasm, but also characterized by a palpable darkness.
Where does darkness come from?
"From me. I have a lot of anxiety and dark thoughts and it's scary to share. But if someone who feels the same way can feel less alone, that's enough for me," she says and continues:
"My dream is just for someone to feel something when they listen. Then I feel like I've succeeded."
