Genoa, who finished in mid-table last season, has started the Serie A season with three draws and six losses – and is last in the series on three points.
On Saturday, the club announced that coach Patrick Vieira would be fired. Roberto Murgita would take over as interim manager.
It was a year as a coach in Genoa for Vieira, who previously coached Strasbourg, Nice and Crystal Palace, among others.
As a player, former midfielder Vieira represented clubs such as Milan, Juventus, Inter and Manchester City, but is a huge icon at Arsenal where he played for nine years. Vieira won World Cup gold with the French national team in 1998.
