Lyons submitted his resignation to the new Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Thursday.
Lyons, who was appointed deputy director of ICE by Donald Trump in March 2025, has been a key ally of the president in his hardline immigration policies. According to U.S. media, Lyons has been responsible for about half a million deportations carried out by ICE since last year.
Lyons has been heavily criticized for the methods used by ICE.
It is unclear who will take over after Lyons.
