The man is being treated in hospital for his injuries but is said to be conscious. It is still unclear what prompted the shooting, which occurred on Thursday afternoon local time. According to US authorities, the man is an undocumented migrant.
Shortly after the shooting, demonstrators gathered to protest against immigration police. Several marched to the hospital where the man is being treated, and images from the scene show them clashing with police.
“ICE off our streets now!” the protesters shouted, according to the AP.
In a statement, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the situation “unreasonable and extremely serious” and called for all immigration police operations in the city to be halted.
Several high-profile deaths have occurred in connection with federal police interventions over the past year. The shootings have led to widespread, repeated demonstrations across the United States against ICE and its work.
Among the most high-profile cases are the fatal shooting of Mexican citizen Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston, Texas, in July, and the death of American Renée Good in January.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a federal law enforcement agency with more than 20,000 employees and over 400 offices in the United States and around the world.
ICE was established in 2003 in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Its mission is to protect the United States from cross-border crime and illegal immigration. Unlike the US Border Patrol, however, ICE operates domestically. ICE agents are authorized to stop and arrest people suspected of violating immigration laws.
The agency has received greatly increased resources and made thousands of arrests since US President Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. Many arrests have taken place in public places, leading to several clashes with demonstrators protesting the agency’s work.
The agency is only allowed to use force when deemed necessary and in accordance with US law.
