The ICC has charged the Taliban’s Minister of Education, Habibullah Agha, and Minister of Higher Education Neda Mohammad Nadeem with crimes against humanity in connection with the Taliban regime’s oppression of women and girls.

The spokesman for the Afghan Taliban regime, Zabihullah Mujahid, condemned the court’s decision and said that Afghanistan does not recognize any court called an “international court.” The country therefore attaches no importance to its positions:

“We adhere to Sharia and its courts,” Mujahid said in a written statement.

The ICC has no police force of its own and is therefore dependent on member states to make arrests if the ministers cross their borders.

The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in August 2021 and have since imposed extensive restrictions and bans on education for girls and women.
