In an interview with CBS News, the head of the UN's atomic energy agency IAEA states that Iran can soon enrich uranium again, despite US President Donald Trump's claims that the nuclear energy program has been set back several years,
The ability is there, says Grossi.
He emphasizes, however, that IAEA does not assess that Iran had nuclear weapons or that the country was very close to acquiring them. IAEA cannot at the same time confirm that the Iranian nuclear energy program was entirely peaceful.
We did not see any program that was heading in that direction (to acquire nuclear weapons). But at the same time, there were very important questions that were unanswered.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has admitted that the US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities caused significant damage, but it is still unclear exactly how extensive the damage is.
According to Grossi, it is however possible to get centrifuges that enrich uranium up and running within a few months.
One cannot claim that everything has disappeared, and that there is nothing there, he says.
