Food prices in Swedish grocery stores remained stable during October, for both food items and the entire range. According to Matpriskollen, this is due, among other things, to an increasing price war.

I've never seen anything like this, dumping prices like that, says Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen.

Two weeks ago, Delicato balls cost 22 kronor, today they go for 9.90 in some stores.

For us consumers, it's great, so hurry up and get a bargain. That's all I can say. I heard this morning that the stores are out of chocolate balls.

According to Ulf Mazur, the fact that food prices have generally stopped in October is due to several factors, such as the fact that the krona has stabilized and that the world market price of crops has declined over the past year.

“Extreme price focus”

But above all, he believes that it is because discount chains have lowered their prices.

October is a month with an extreme focus on prices, partly due to PRO conducting its annual price survey. Then the grocery stores want to advertise that they have the cheapest prices. Then there have been many reports in recent months about how well the discount chains are doing. Then no one else dares to raise any prices. Rather, they do everything they can to lower prices. That's what's catching up a bit now in October.

One product category where the price, however, increased during October is berries, with a price change of 7.9 percent. Lingonberries increased by a full 20 percent, for example, "ICA 500 gram" lingonberries increased from 43 to 61 kronor. The price of marmalade and jam is affected by higher berry prices and increased by 0.9 percent. Beef and caviar increased by 0.6 percent.

Fruit and butter

The goods that decreased in price during the month included fruit, −1.2 percent, butter, –1.0 percent and frozen vegetables, –0.7 percent.

The decrease in fruit is largely due to the fact that citrus fruits tend to be cheaper this time of year. Then pumpkin, cucumber, cauliflower, broccoli and root vegetables have continued to fall in price. The price of butter is mainly due to Willys and Ica Maxi having dumped it in many stores – the 450-gram bestseller is included in the PRO survey, so the decrease in butter is only due to this price war.
