The highest warning level for heavy rain is in effect today in areas around Barcelona and Valencia in northeastern Spain.

The rain, which is the remains of hurricane Gabrielle, arrived over Spain on Sunday. But on Monday, they are expected to become even worse along parts of the east coast, including in and around Valencia, as well as southwest of Barcelona.

School attendance and much other activity are reported to be cancelled in several areas. The weather agency Aemet has issued a red warning level, the highest on a three-level scale, along parts of the coast.
