Hurghada-St. Petersburg Flight Diverts to Finland After Drone Alert Closes Airport

A passenger plane en route from the Egyptian resort of Hurghada to St. Petersburg had to land in Finland after another drone alert in Russia's border areas.

The plane had come from Hurghada, but its destination, Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg, was closed to traffic amid alerts about new Ukrainian drone attacks.

The plane was allowed to land at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport outside the Finnish capital overnight, the Finnish Coast Guard announced. It was allowed to refuel there and later continue to Russia.

Finland has imposed restrictions on maritime and aviation traffic in an area in the eastern Gulf of Finland on each of the past two mornings, citing the risk of drones.

Two drones were shot down in the area around St. Petersburg overnight, according to Leningrad Region Governor Aleksandr Drozdenko.
