The announcement that Hungary would leave the ICC came already in early April this year, in connection with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to the country.
As a signatory to the ICC's foundational document, the Rome Statute, the country was legally bound to arrest Netanyahu, who is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
Instead, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that Hungary would leave the court.
The decision to withdraw has been criticized by, among others, Sweden's Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard.
The process is expected to take around a year.
