A German anti-fascist activist who identifies as non-binary has been sentenced to eight years in prison in Hungary after they participated in a violent protest ahead of a far-right rally honoring Nazi soldiers.

The prosecutor accused the activist of assault and belonging to a criminal organization. The convicted person was one of 19 protesters who attacked right-wing extremists at a Nazi rally.

The convicted person, named as Maja T by the court, questioned the legitimacy of the trial.

"We all know what sentence the prime minister of this country wants to see," the convicted person said, indirectly referring to Hungary's leader, Viktor Orbán.

The convicted person's father also condemned the sentence as politically motivated:

"This was a political show trial," said Father Wolfram Jarosch.
