According to an assessment by Hungarian authorities, the ten diplomats have "engaged in activities" that violate the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, Hungarian Foreign Minister Anita Orbán announced.
“This decision protects the security and sovereignty of Hungary,” she writes on X.
Moscow promises retaliation.
The response to the Russophobic lobby in Budapest will be sharp and painful, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told state-run Tass.
The Russian ambassador to the country was reportedly informed of the matter on Tuesday.
“This does not mean a break in diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary intends to continue the necessary dialogue, based on mutual respect and compliance with the rules,” writes Anita Orbán.
