Around 450,000 households in southern France remain without power after the unusually strong Storm Nils ravaged southwestern Europe.

Trees have been uprooted, roads have been flooded. Flights, trains and ferries are being cancelled, and major problems are being reported in road traffic. A truck driver died when a branch went through the windscreen.

A total of 900,000 customers lost power when Storm Nils hit. By Friday morning, half had their power restored. According to French electricity distributor Enedis, around 3,000 people are working to reconnect customers.

The floods are complicating repair work because fields are flooded and some roads are blocked, Enedis's crisis manager Hervé Champenois said at a press conference on Thursday.
