Hundreds of Scientists Warn EU Against Revising Nature Protection Rules

Plans to revise Natura 2000 and the EU’s Birds and Habitats Directives are drawing sharp criticism from environmental groups.

Opening up the long-standing nature protection directives to changes would be “a mistake,” hundreds of scientists write in an open letter to the Commission.

“Scientific studies have documented the positive effects of this policy, especially on bird populations that have benefited from special protection measures,” the letter states, among other things.

The plans are nevertheless included in the work program for 2027, which the European Commission adopted on Wednesday. The revisions are intended to determine whether changes are needed to ensure the rules “continue to function effectively.”

Overall, the work program is significantly narrower than before, with only 23 new or updated initiatives promised. A number of old proposals are being withdrawn at the same time.
