Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the courthouse when the decision was announced on Monday. Party leader Nikolai Rybakov said the decision would be appealed.

We have a long road ahead of us and we have a big and important task: to stop the killing and restore peace, he said.

Yabloko, whose slogan is “For peace and freedom,” is the only party in Russia that opposes the war in Ukraine.

The background to Monday's legal review is that Yabloko's right to stand in the parliamentary elections in September has been challenged by the nationalist party Fatherland (Rodina).

According to an opinion poll from earlier this year, the party has support of three percent, which is below the threshold to enter the Duma.
