According to the newspaper Haaretz, the riot started after a police intervention. The arrested man is said to have told passersby that he was arrested for resisting military service.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews have long had a special exemption from military service in Israel. Recently, the law on military service has been changed to cover almost the entire population, but in practice this has not been fully implemented.
An angry crowd quickly gathered and attacked the police with stones. According to Haaretz, they were able to quickly reach the scene via an organized telephone network between groups of ultra-Orthodox.
In social media posts from the scene, police are seen throwing stun grenades into the crowd.
According to Israeli Channel 13 , four people have been detained in connection with the riot.
