The fire started in the town of Sainte-Marie-la-Mer at a campsite and destroyed dozens of caravans and motorhomes before spreading. French emergency services said nearly 3,000 tourists and local residents had been forced to evacuate, half of them from three campsites in the affected area.
There have also been fires in other places along the Mediterranean coast in southern France, including in the departments of Hérault and Aude. Wildfires are also raging in Bouches-du-Rhône.
