Large explosions were reported and a large fire spread after an attack in the village of Myla in the Bucha district west of Kyiv on Saturday night. A restaurant and about 50 residential buildings were destroyed or damaged.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is highly critical of ammunition being stored so close to homes.
"A preliminary investigation has been opened under the section on misconduct. There are rules: ammunition must not be located near houses or other residential buildings," he writes.
In a later video statement, Zelenskyy says that the weapons depot “definitely should not have been there.”
Grenades, mines and other ammunition and drones detonated. It's extensive, he says.
37 people have died in the attack and the subsequent fires, Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv region's military administration, writes on Telegram.
In addition, more than 40 people have been injured, according to Tkachenko. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes.
Bucha became world-famous through Russia's brutal massacre there in March 2022, at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Residents were mutilated, tortured and raped. The UN has documented at least 73 murdered civilians, while Ukraine counts up to 500.
Both Russia and Ukraine have for several months intensified their long-range attacks and increased attacks on civilian infrastructure such as warehouses and oil and port facilities.
