Since last Monday, Timmy, as German media have named the whale, has been fighting for his life in the southwestern Baltic Sea. After an intensive rescue effort, the more-than-ten-metre-long whale broke free on Friday - but on Saturday he became stuck on a new sandbank in the Bay of Wismar.
But late Monday he swam free again, and no new sightings of the whale have been made. Despite the good news, Timmy still faces a major challenge - finding his way to the Atlantic through the North Sea.
"The road to the North Sea is still long, and we can only keep our fingers crossed that it gets there," says Burkard Baschek at the Maritime Museum in Germany.
