Keep an eye on the temperature

In times of sharply rising electricity prices, many people are thinking economically and want to turn off the heating in their homes during the winter. However, this can be costly in the form of freezing and water damage.

The recommendation is instead to keep the heating at around 15 degrees to avoid frost damage. A temperature that is too low, combined with no other measures taken, can mean lower insurance compensation, or none at all, if an accident occurs.

Avoid water damage

Water in pipes or containers can eventually cause cracks or leaks. Before winter, it is therefore recommended to turn off the main water tap and drain the water heater as well as the toilet. If you have a garden hose, disconnect it to avoid water remaining in the pipe, which can freeze and create a leak in the wall.

.

Prevent burglary

Länsförsäkringar warns that many burglaries occur during the winter months. In addition to the obvious - making sure, for example, that the patio door is locked - you can make it even more difficult for the thief.

It is advisable to have bars on basement windows as well as install fire and burglar alarms. If possible, also try to visit the holiday home or get help from a neighbour. An alternative is to DNA-tag belongings.

.

Avoid pests

When the holiday home is unoccupied, it is easy to get unexpected visitors in the form of pests such as mice. Anticimex advises trying to seal holes in the house foundation by, for example, installing sealing strips. Vents can be secured with metal mesh.

Stacked wood next to the facade is especially appreciated by rodents that find shelter during the winter, but perhaps most importantly - empty the pantry. However, this applies not only to food but also to, for example, pet food, candles or soap.

.

Prepare the garden for winter

There are also things to consider outside and around the holiday home itself. Remove fallen fruit from the plot to avoid attracting unwanted visitors. By turning water barrels upside down, you can avoid water collecting.
