The proposal is based on a system similar to the Suez Canal, with a toll for passing ships. As an alternative to a fixed fee, there is also information about compensation based on each ship's cargo.

According to the state-controlled Iranian news agency Tasnim, the plans could generate huge revenues - around 100 billion US dollars annually, which would be more than the country's oil revenues, which are said to be around 80 billion dollars.
