Saudi Arabia Reports Riyadh Blast Hours After Houthi Threat to US

The Houthi movement has warned the United States against actively intervening in the conflict in Yemen. If it does, the Iran-backed movement will respond “swiftly and painfully,” a spokesman says. Just hours later, loud explosions were reported in Riyadh.

Following escalating military operations against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on Riyadh’s international airport, Yemen’s Houthi movement has issued new warnings.

"If the US interferes in the aggression against Yemen, we will not be restrained in our response. Instead, there will be a swift and painful response targeting the US and all its interests in the region," Muhammed al-Bukhaiti, a senior figure in the movement's political branch, told AFP.

He also urged "all employees and those working at Saudi oil facilities and airports to stay away from these places, which have become legitimate targets."

On Monday evening, several news agencies reported hearing loud explosions in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. The Saudi military said it had destroyed a ballistic missile heading towards Riyadh. The Houthi movement, for its part, claimed it had attacked a military base in southern Saudi Arabia and King Khalid Airport outside Riyadh, saying the attack on the airport had hit its target “precisely.”

The airport has been hit by rocket attacks several times in the past week and is currently closed. On Saturday, at least 12 people were killed at the airport in what was described as one of the deadliest attacks in the country in years. Following the attack, US President Donald Trump opened the door to US strikes against the Houthi movement, as requested by Saudi Arabia.
