Houthis Seek $51 Billion From Saudi Arabia to End Yemen War, Report Says

Saudi Arabia has contacted Yemen’s Houthi movement to ask what it would take to end the escalating war, The Wall Street Journal reports. The answer: the equivalent of about SEK 500 billion.

The Houthi regime in Yemen justified its demand for $51 billion as fair war reparations for years of Saudi military action and blockade, the newspaper writes, citing several anonymous sources.

Another demand was reportedly that Saudi Arabia recognize the Houthis as Yemen’s legitimate government.

Saudi Arabia entered Yemen’s civil war more than a decade ago and supports the internationally recognized but weak government against the Shiite Islamist, Iran-backed Houthi movement.

Amid an ongoing escalation, Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities and airports have been regularly attacked. The Houthis also control maritime traffic through the Red Sea.
