Households with more money in their pockets and a more stable market have led to a surge in housing construction. And construction is expected to pick up further in the next two years.

The Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's construction forecast from December shows the positive development. The National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's assessment is that approximately 32,000 housing starts will be started this year, of which 30,000 will be through new construction and 2,000 through renovations.

For 2026, it is estimated that 35,000 housing units will be started and in 2027 around 37,000.

"Housing construction during the second half of 2025 has been stronger than we thought in our forecast from last summer. This means that we see a light at the end of the tunnel for housing construction, but it is more of a flashlight than a spotlight," says Oskar Gramstad, economist at the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning, according to a press release.
