All hostages are unharmed, local police say.
The alarm about a bomb threat at a bank branch in Bakersfield came in on Tuesday afternoon local time. It then became clear that a man had barricaded himself in the four-story building.
Nearby buildings, including Bakersfield City Hall and the police headquarters, were evacuated and several roads were temporarily closed.
Two of the hostages were released on Tuesday after negotiations with the authorities.
