Homeowners Welcome New Electricity Grid Rules Amid Rising Fees

Freeze the electricity tax and let the existing rules apply, thinks one of the larger electricity grid owners. It's time to tighten the rules, thinks the Homeowners regarding the electricity authority's proposal to try to slow down the sharply rising electricity grid fees.

The grid company Ellevio, one of the three large ones, does not like the Energy Market Inspectorate's (EI) proposal.

"We are concerned about the signals that EI wants to tighten the model for how grid companies' revenues are regulated, since a lowered ceiling would have small effects on households' grid costs but dramatic consequences for the ability to finance grid expansion", says Henrik Bergström, social policy manager at Ellevio, in a press release.

Instead, the electricity tax, which has increased strongly over the years, should be frozen, thinks the grid company.

"To maintain today's regulatory model and stop the tax indexing would mean significant cost relief for customers without compromising on socially critical grid investments", continues Bergström.

The consumer organization Villaägarna, of course, has a different opinion. Today's regulation is too lenient. The tightening proposed is good.

"The fact that electricity prices are increasing by almost 11 percent while inflation is at 2.3 percent shows with all desirable clarity how weak the Swedish regulation of electricity monopolies is. Which company on a competitive market can increase prices almost five times more than inflation? Hardly any. It shows that electricity regulation must be tightened", says Håkan Larsson, social policy manager at Villaägarnas Riksförbund, in a press release.
