It was during the second set at the score 6–4, 2–2 that Rune injured his foot during the game. The 22-year-old received care on the side but it quickly became apparent that he could not complete the match.
Thus, the opponent Ugo Humbert won on walkover, and the Frenchman is now ready for Sunday's final.
The end of the match was strange, I feel extremely disappointed for Holger, it's tough for him and it was not the way I wanted to win. We played a good match, he played a little better than me, so yes, I'm sorry and I hope he'll get better soon, says Humbert to SVT.
Later on Saturday, the Danish Ekstrabladet, which had been in contact with Rune's mother Aneke Rune, reported that the injury was about a torn tendon and that an operation awaits the 22-year-old. The newspaper writes further that Rune will be out for at least six months.
The other semifinal between Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud was won by the latter in two straight sets: 6–3, 6–4. The Norwegian is thus ready for the final against Ugo Humbert.
It was a shame what happened to Holger. I wish him all the best and a quick recovery. Ugo will be a tough opponent in the final, but I'll do my best, says Ruud to Norwegian TV2 after the match.
The final is played on Sunday at 15.00 in the Kungliga tennishallen in Stockholm.
