"It feels very, very good to get this chance. I have been involved with the club in one way or another over the years, so in many ways it's not really coming back. I grew up in the city and the association with all the people around, so yes: Linköping Hockey Club is like a family to me", he says to the club's website.
Magnus Johansson becomes assistant coach to new head coach Mikael "Musse" Håkanson, who is an old teammate.
Johansson, 51, played 16 seasons with the club, nine of which were in the SHL and as captain. He is the club's most played player of all time with 786 matches.
He won World Championship gold with Tre Kronor, Swedish Championship gold with Frölunda, and took silver with Linköping as his best.
The club missed the playoffs last season.
