Kristian Gerner passed away on Maundy Thursday after a period of illness, his wife Kerstin Nyström told TT.
Gerner became a doctor of philosophy and an associate professor in history at Lund University in 1984 and a lecturer there in 1985.
Between 1994 and 2002, he was a professor of Eastern European history and culture at Uppsala University. He was then, from 2002 to 2009, a professor of history at Lund University.
As a specialist, he often appeared in the media as a commentator and analyst, not least on the events surrounding the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russia's renewed claims to power in recent decades.
Gerner was a member of, among others, the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences, and he wrote several books.
