Kristian Gerner passed away on Maundy Thursday after a period of illness, his wife Kerstin Nyström told TT.
Gerner earned a PhD and became an associate professor in history at Lund University in 1984, and a lecturer there in 1985.
From 1994 to 2002 he was professor of Eastern European history and culture at Uppsala University. From 2002 to 2009 he was professor of history at Lund University.
As a specialist, he often appeared in the media as a commentator and analyst, notably on events surrounding the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russia's claims to power in recent decades.
Gerner was a member of, among others, the Royal Swedish Academy of War Sciences and wrote several books.
