There was a chaotic end to the US Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta earlier this year, when the lead vehicle led the pack - Jessica McClain, Ednah Kurgat and Emma Grace Hurley - the wrong way.
The miss meant that the trio fell outside the top four, which was required to qualify for a place in the World Road Championships in September.
But now World Athletics has chosen to make an exception and allow seven female runners from the United States to compete at the World Championships.
"World Athletics has shown understanding for the affected athletes who would otherwise have missed the World Championships," the federation writes.
The three who did not qualify for placement will, however, run "out of competition." They will collect ranking points, but cannot be awarded medals or prize money.
