There is extensive media coverage of the House Oversight Committee hearing. A large media presence is in Chappaqua, New York, where she and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, own a property.

A Clinton adviser discovered that a photo from the closed-door hearing had been leaked, which is against the rules. A committee member admitted in a statement that he had leaked a photo to a political commentator, after which the hearing was suspended.

At the time, Hillary Clinton had accused the committee of "partisan political theater" and said that she could not remember meeting Epstein.

Call on Trump

Hillary Clinton released her opening statement before the committee, in which she said that Trump's close contacts with Epstein should be a subject for a committee hearing.

The Republican-led committee has for months demanded to question the Clintons about their dealings with Epstein, even accusing them of contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena.

Both Hillary and Bill Clinton have denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein, and neither has been charged with any crimes.

The conversation is being recorded on video, but is not intended to be made public.

Bill Clinton will be questioned in turn on Friday, reports the media company NBC News.

Open hearing

The couple, in turn, have offered to be questioned at a committee hearing open to the public, or to answer the questions in writing. In an interview with the BBC, Hillary Clinton claimed that the committee chairman, Republican James Comer of Kentucky, is exploiting the Epstein scandal politically.

"Other witnesses have been asked to testify. They have given written answers under oath. Why do they want to drag us into this? To take the focus off President (Donald) Trump," Clinton replied rhetorically in an interview with the BBC last week.
