The three hikers from Austria perished in connection with a sudden thunderstorm that swept over Tyrolen during the weekend, according to the police on Tuesday.

The group, consisting of a couple in their 60s and a 62-year-old relative, is described as experienced hikers. They were on the mountain Mittagspitze in western Austria when they were surprised by a sudden change in the weather. The trio then decided to quickly turn back to the village Flirsch, but never arrived.

The three bodies were found at an altitude of around 2,270 meters after they were reported missing and a search effort was initiated, according to the police.

Similar incidents are extremely rare, according to local authorities.
