At the Swedish Tourist Association's accommodations in the Swedish mountains, the number of booked guest nights increased by 4 percent from June through September compared with last year.

September saw the biggest increase, with bookings this year up 12 percent compared with the same month last year.

Broken foot

It is peak season for mountain rescue, but so far there have been about the same number of rescues as last summer. Most of the time, they involve simple injuries like a broken foot or someone who is tired and dehydrated.

Perhaps not entirely unexpectedly, Sweden's highest peak, Kebnekaise, is attracting the most tourists this year.

My colleagues around Kebnekaise hardly dare to go on vacation because they know there will be a lot going on in July, says Richard Svedjesten, chairman of the Swedish Mountain Rescue Association.

He says that it is becoming increasingly common for people who have never hiked before to discover the Swedish mountains, and they don't always have the right equipment with them. He particularly emphasizes that the tent should be of good quality.

If you don't want to buy an expensive tent, you might have to ask a friend if you can borrow one, he says.

Try the equipment

A power bank can be a good idea to have with you. A paper map can also be useful if your mobile phone stops working. It is also important to try on the equipment before you set out, not least breaking in your boots to avoid chafing.

The fact that more tourists are expected to visit the mountains in September this year places extra demands on equipment.

It can be very cold and there can be a lot of water so you get wet when you have to cross streams, says Richard Svedjesten.

Another tip for the inexperienced mountain hiker is to perhaps not set off on Kebnekaise straight away but start with easier areas.

It's a bit like starting with a three-wheeled bicycle and moving on to a two-wheeled bicycle once you've mastered the tricycle.
