The three-time World Champion in high jump Mutaz Essa Barshim will miss the World Championship in Tokyo. The Qatari announces this on social media. ”And feel no sorrow that I do not jump. Feel sorrow for the high jump that does not get to have me.”, he writes.

Mutaz Essa Barshim won World Championship gold in 2017, 2019 and 2022, and World Championship bronze most recently in Budapest two years ago. He also won Olympic Games gold in 2021 and bronze in Paris last summer.

"I had planned to make Tokyo my last World Championship but unfortunately my foot has not healed in time. I have given everything.", writes the 34-year-old.

Barshim has jumped as high as 2.43, which is the second highest of all time.

The men's high jump final will be decided on Tuesday.
