The statistics for 2025 are preliminary but show that a total of 591 people died due to poisoning from medicines or drugs. The clearest decrease is among heroin-related deaths, where the trend has also been downward for several years.
The Swedish Board of Forensic Medicine says it has not determined the cause of the decrease, but it may be due to increased use of the antidote naloxone.
The substance that caused the most deaths in 2025 is the painkiller oxycodone.
