Unemployment is decreasing in a majority of the country's counties, new figures from the Swedish Public Employment Service show.

The unemployment rate has decreased to 6.8 percent at the end of January compared with 7.2 percent a year ago, according to statistics.

Unemployment is highest in Skåne (8.9 percent) and Södermanland County (8.5 percent), while it is lowest in Norrbotten County (3.9 percent).

Youth unemployment is also decreasing. A total of just over 40,000 young people aged 18 to 24 were registered with the Swedish Public Employment Service at the end of January. This is a decrease of just over 4,000 compared with the same period last year.

At the same time, the Swedish Public Employment Service is seeing an increase in long-term unemployment. The number of registered unemployed people who have been unemployed for twelve months or longer was just over 153,000 in January, an increase of almost 2,000 people from January the previous year.
