Tromsö University Hospital announced in the evening that they had received one person who had been taken there. A helicopter from the Norwegian rescue service participated in the rescue operation.
It was at 15:53 on Thursday afternoon that the alarm was raised about an avalanche near Kårsavagge, west of Abisko National Park.
A helicopter, standing on the ground, was swept away by the avalanche. Seven people, including the pilot, were involved in the accident. Five of the people were uninjured, while two were initially missing.
Niklas Lindén at the sea and air rescue center said to Expressen that the people involved had been engaging in helicopter skiing, also known as heliskiing.
In connection with this, the avalanche swept away the helicopter.
The five people who were not swept away by the avalanche were "in good physical condition", said André Waplan, internal commander at rescue cooperation north, to Norrländska Socialdemokraten.
The pilot was alone in the helicopter, which was standing on the ground, when the avalanche was triggered.
He was standing on the ground when he saw the avalanche trigger and never managed to start the helicopter again, so it was swept away by the avalanche, said the helicopter company's CEO to NSD.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the avalanche risk in the Abisko-/Riksgränsen mountains is graded at level three out of five, which means a significant risk.
