It didn't work against President Trump, and it won't work against me. You can be sure of that, Pete Hegseth says in a video clip on X.
Earlier this year, Democrats in Congress tried to impeach the Republican defense secretary, but the effort was postponed because the party did not have a majority in either chamber at the time.
After the midterm elections, the conditions have changed. Democrats have urged top Republicans to "get lawyers", while only a simple majority in the House of Representatives is needed to initiate impeachment proceedings - a majority the Democrats have secured.
Hegseth says he "will not give in".
Their policies are not working, so their obsession with political theater - disguised as power - drives them to try to destroy their opponents, he says.
According to sources cited by CBS News, Hegseth is also facing challenges within his own party, where the war in Iran has been cited as one of the reasons for the election result.
Recently, Donald Trump said he still supports his defense secretary, but according to the sources, the president has been privately venting about Hegseth's future while looking for a scapegoat.
Removing a defense secretary requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate, which the Democrats have not secured.
