"It looks the same every year. An hour or so before midnight, the number of calls we receive doubles, and at midnight in parts of the country it triples compared with a normal weekend," says Douglas Norström, acting press manager at SOS Alarm, in a press release.
On a typical weekend evening, there are around 3,200 calls, but on New Year's Eve night (from 10 pm to 6 am) there are around 8,000 calls to 112.
Of those calls, a third are estimated to be false calls from people who do not need help.
“All calls end up in the same queue, which means that a call about a dripping faucet or noisy neighbors can take time away from someone in cardiac arrest,” says Norström.
