This is the result of better diagnosis, treatment and care. Today, at least a quarter of a million Swedes live with heart failure. The fact that the population is ageing and that more people with heart failure and other heart diseases are surviving means that this group is expected to become even larger.
In the early 2000s, an average of 62 out of 100,000 inhabitants died of heart failure each year. Now the death rate has been reduced to around 40 per 100,000 - a reduction of 35 percent, according to calculations based on the National Board of Health and Welfare's cause of death statistics.
