When Oscar Bergendahl injured his left foot in a match against Magdeburg last week, it also meant that he had to decline the World Championship.
In the Swedish squad, there were potential replacements in Andreas "Stycket" Nilsson and Ludvig Jurmala Åström, but none of the midfielders got the chance. Instead, the choice fell on Olle Forsell Schefvert.
"Olle is a defense specialist in his club team and becomes an important alternative for us now that Oscar unfortunately cannot participate. The idea is to broaden ourselves on the three positions and also have an alternative that can contribute to our fine counter-attacking game. Up front, we still have Max Darj and Felix Möller on midfield", says Michael Apelgren in a press release.
31-year-old Forsell Schefvert, who normally plays for Rhein Neckar-Löwen, was also part of Sweden's squad during the home World Championship 2023 but then got sparse playing time. In total, he has managed to play five A-international matches.
"I'm glad and it feels very honorable", he says after the World Championship selection.
Sweden plays all its World Championship matches in Oslo. The premiere is against Japan on January 16.
