The news of the return has hit the entertainment world like a bombshell. The revival will be a limited series of five episodes, with filming set to begin in 2027 - a decade after the sixth and final season ended, Variety reports.
"Girls" aired from 2012 to 2017 and followed a group of dysfunctional friends in their 20s in New York City.
"We've always said we would only return to 'Girls' if there was a specific story we were passionate about telling," Dunham said in a statement.
"I've missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn't really imagine them today. Then, right around my fortieth birthday, they started talking to me in the shower," Dunham continued.
In addition to Dunham as Hannah Horvath, Allison Williams will return as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, and Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells will also reprise his role as Elijah Krantz.
However, Adam Driver, who played Hannah's on-again, off-again boyfriend Adam Sackler, is not in the cast. In her memoir "Famesick," released in April this year, Dunham claims that Driver was "verbally aggressive, condescending, and physically threatening" during filming. She recounts an incident in which he threw a chair against the wall next to her because he was angry that she had forgotten her lines.
