Midfielder Miguel Martins was seen as one of Portugal's absolutely most important players during the World Championship, but will now miss the entire tournament.
Just hours before Portugal enters the tournament, his club team Ålborg announced that he had tested positive for doping.
It comes as a huge shock to us, and we have taken direct contact with Miguel, says Ålborg's club director Jan Larsen to the club's website.
Miguel himself claims his innocence in the matter, and has requested that his B-sample be analyzed. But for now, it is clear that there will be no World Championship play with Portugal this time.
He himself is just as confused as we are, and insists that he has done nothing wrong, continues Larsen.
Portugal plays its World Championship premiere against the USA tonight, with kick-off at 18.00.
