The Trump administration froze $2.3 billion in aid in April, after Harvard rejected the White House's demands for increased influence over the university's operations. On Friday, US President Donald Trump also announced that he wants to revoke Harvard's tax exemption.

"That's what they deserve, he wrote on Truth Social.

A spokesperson for Harvard says that if the university's tax exemption is revoked, it would threaten the school's ability to operate, reports ABC News.

"It would mean reduced economic support to students, that vital medical research programs are abandoned, and that opportunities for innovation disappear, the spokesperson says in a comment.

In the long run, it could have "serious consequences for future higher education" in the entire country, according to Harvard.
