The Biathlon World Championship and Elvira Öberg have not quite been in sync in recent years. She has entered the championships as one of the big favorites. But in Oberhof 2023, she fell ill and missed almost all the races. And last year, she had problems with recovery after the first race and could not do herself justice in the others.
It's clear that the medal still means something to me. I think I've been one of the world's best biathletes for several years, but still haven't succeeded at the World Championship, says Elvira Öberg.
"I got a bit discouraged"
It was also uncertain for a long time what form the silver medalist would be in at the World Championship in Lenzerheide. She fell ill with only a few weeks to go before the World Championship.
Two-three weeks ago, I got a bit discouraged, because the clock was ticking. I didn't know what form I would be in and I didn't want to have another championship where I didn't reach the level, says Elvira Öberg.
I clearly came pretty close anyway.
Big sister Hanna's tears after the race are tears of joy for Elvira.
I'm so impressed, it's incredibly well done considering the background. And I know that in biathlon, it doesn't get easier when you want something very much. That she does it today, I'm extremely impressed by, says Hanna Öberg.
I know how it is to get a success when you've struggled, I'm happy for her.
Celebrating with semlor
Hanna Öberg struggled with her form before the World Championship two years ago and then became the World Championship queen with four medals, including two golds. Maybe that's why she's crying tears of joy for her little sister's silver.
Hanna, if anyone, knows how much I've struggled for this medal and waited for it. She knows how I had it in Oberhof. She's been so close every time. Now we both have individual World Championship medals, it's big, says Elvira Öberg.
Big sister Hanna has always been one step ahead of Elvira, but now Hanna thinks Elvira has caught up with her.
Now we have huge help from each other. I have her to thank for a lot, we really help each other out.
The silver medal will be celebrated with semlor at the Swedish hotel on Sunday evening.
